  • Well, my trusty KLR (aka Gumby due to his color and flexibility) is packed and ready for a return to the Cariboo country of BC. Kathi suggested that the addition of the wash basin on top was reminiscent of the Beverly Hillbillies. All I needed was a rocking chair on top.
  • Then we remembered that Karen & Erle had brought a set of Adirondack chairs from Ontario for Kathi's birthday party. (After all we did ask people to bring chairs.) Est Voila, Gumby had a camping chair for the trip. An excellent fit.
  • John Green joined me for the first leg of the trip and he came equipped with a helmet camera. Several of the photos in this presentation came from his camera. This one just a few blocks from home
  • Doug Stuart met up with us in Sicamous on his F650GS Dakar. He would be with us for the first few days. Missing from our crew was Adrian Piebenga who had been anxiously awaiting his drive shaft for his bike. It turned up on Friday night. The plan was to install it on Saturday and meet up with us on Sunday.
  • We introduced Doug to Gumby and topped up with fuel in Sicamous. <br />

  • A few miles up the Trans-Canada Highway and we left pavement at Craigellachie. Craigellachie is famous as the place where they drove the last spike when completing the cross Canada railroad. It's now famous as the jumping off point of our tour.
  • The Gorge FSR (otherwise known as Anstey River FSR) is a steep climb up over the mountain. We gained about 3500' in about 18km. (I know, that's a mixture of metric and statute, but get used to it. Like a true mixed up Canadian, this is how I relate elevation and distance. )
  • Near the top, I rounded a corner and came face to face with a mother Moose and two calves. Unfortunately I couldn't get the camera out in time. I guess fortunately she chose to take off with the kids rather than get aggressive. They were gone before the others rounded the bend.
  • A contrast in bikes. Doug's lowered 650 Dakar and John's GS Adventure. Definitely two different schools of thought for back road travel.
  • As we came off the summit, Anstey Arm of Shuswap Lake came into view.
  • A selfie of Doug, John and myself.
  • Shuswap Lake looked beautiful from this height. There are no roads along Anstey Arm and the northern end is in Anstey Hunakwa Provincial Park. The only access to the park in this area is by boat. And we could see lots of boats.
  • The road was in pretty good condition as it hugged the hillside, twisting and turning with the geography.
  • It was also warming up pretty good so we found some shade for a drink and to remove some layers.
  • Soon we started climbing again up the Anstey River Valley.
  • Another break in the shade with Doug & John.
  • This time we got to check out some heavy duty equipment. With the dry forests and fire bans equipment like this also gets grounded. Those chains could easily strike some rocks and spark a fire.
  • Doug recalled backpacking into Mosquito Lake to fish back when there was no road through here. Our route took us close so we stopped to check it out.
  • There are definitely some fish in there, but there doesn't appear to be a decent camping spot. Not much level ground that isn't marsh here.
  • I was surprised to see such massive cedar trees in this small area. I would have expected this to occur more in a coastal rain forest.
